Kids are just a few clicks away from inappropriate YouTube content

We here at Baby’s Brilliant enjoy watching the wide variety of “Let It Go” covers from the movie Frozen on YouTube with our kids. We recently watched an excellent interpretation by Alex Boyé and the Ft. One Voice Children’s Choir that features an Africanized tribal cover of the song. After viewing that, we were curious about the video recommended on the right of the same group performing Katy Perry’s “Roar.” We kept on viewing and clicking, and within another two clicks, YouTube recommended that we view a video about how to use a Smith and Wesson weapon. It makes us wonder what YouTube would have recommended if we didn’t have the site’s Safety Mode enabled!

This was another reminder to us why the Baby’s Brilliant app is so valuable to parents. Instead of showing kids YouTube videos that might lead a kid down a path to content that’s inappropriate for their age, Baby’s Brilliant videos and songs are appropriate for all ages.

The experts at Kspersky Lab agree. In a recent article titled, “Children exposed to inappropriate content on YouTube,” they said that kids can be as few as three clicks away from inappropriate content. They advise that parents not only set safety controls while on the internet, but supervise their children and discuss internet safety with them. Australian experts note that as kids get older, they both inadvertently and purposely are able to access inappropriate material. The Internet Safety Project reminds us that although YouTube has guidelines for what can be posted, it doesn’t view the videos before they are uploaded and may be suitable for adults only.

Thankfully, babies and toddlers will be safe when using the Baby’s Brilliant app, with or without supervision. Let kids enjoy the wonders of childhood at their own pace!
