Before you hand over your iPhone or iPad to your kids, you’ll want to ensure they:
- Can’t access inappropriate content
- Will spend time on the right app
- Won’t spend too much time on the device
- Won’t spend your money
Thankfully, today’s smart devices have settings and apps that can help. In this great NY Times video, “Making Devices Child-Friendly,” Molly Wood suggests settings that parents can change on the iPad (and iPhone) that can restrict what a child can see. You can restrict surfing, specific applications, and ratings for what a child can see.
To enable these, go to:
- Settings > General > Enable Restrictions
- Set Passcode
Please remember that Baby’s Brilliant will soon be providing much longer videos for a small fee. If you’ve made sure your child can’t make in-app purchases on the iPad or iPhone, please be sure to purchase and download these before handing over your device to your child!
Wood adds that under Accessibility > Guided Access, you can restrict your child to one application.
Of course, we recommend Baby’s Brilliant!
She says that although there is no built-in timer for Apple products, there is an app called Parental Timelock that is well worth the $1.99 it costs.
Wood also has recommendations for setting up Netflix, YouTube and iTunes so that kids won’t see things that are inappropriate. Of course, all Baby’s Brilliant videos are rated G for GREAT!!!
We hope these safety tips help!
