We’d like to thank Baby’s Brilliant for sponsoring this post.
It’s a busy world that we live in, and getting and keeping kids ready and engaged in active learning is a number one concern, as a parent, and as a first point educator. When my oldest daughter started preschool, she knew her alphabet, numbers to 50, address, phone number and could spell her name. A lot of that had to do with what she learned at home through one on one time with me, but also through what kind of educational playtime she encountered.
She’s 16-years-old now, and my younger children have a whole new world of educational tools with which I can surround them. It can be overwhelming! One thing for sure – the little one’s love to play with my iPhone and with the iPad. Now, since we can attach the iPad to the back of the driver and passenger seats of the car to keep them entertained while we travel, it’s an on the go entertainment center that I have control in programming!
With that in mind, I pretty much rely on great apps from the iTunes store to help me pour goodness into my children. That’s the same idea that made Ulli Coulter, a mother of three who was always searching for those things she wanted to pour into her children, create Baby’s Brilliant. Now I don’t have to search, because with Baby’s Brilliant app there is a “variety of entertaining and educational movies, Night Lights for nap time and bedtime, and music that inspires” for infants and toddlers (and in this case some Mommy’s – namely me).
Take a look at the video and see how it works.
When I was younger, before babies, I listened to classical music at bedtimes. It was a ritual for me – I would turn out the lights and tune into a local classical radio station. I still do sometimes with my headphones on – it is extremely relaxing – something a mother really needs at times. My kids have become accustomed to this ritual as well. This made one of the three options on Baby Brilliant app a no-brainer for me:
Once you download the app from the iTunes store, explore the 3 categories from which you can choose:
Night Lights
I went immediately to night lights. I was so excited when I found the classical music, but even more exciting to me was the background picture – a lava lamp!
You know who is mesmerized by this music and this lava lamp? This little girl when we’re riding in the car:
Of course, there are other choices, but I LOVE this one. Here are a couple of other things I love – you can choose to use the timer and/or loop the music. (This goes for videos as well) There are several musical options to choose from on the night-light and my kids don’t care if it’s lights out or during the day. Here’s a secret – neither do I. When I was traveling and kind of wound up, I turned this app on my iPhone and used it myself.
Movies
I should mention right here that I taught children’s Sunday school for 12 years and know almost every song ever sung in such a place. Fun, fun fun! I was so pleased that I found some choices I haven’t found anywhere else until now! I love this little movie with songs that helps kids learn how to do some basic spelling and about basic bible concepts. I believe that the earlier you begin to teach children something, the earlier they develop the skill set for learning.
And finally, Music!
So many choices, so little time! We love to dance and sing, sing and sing, and dance! Even in languages we don’t exactly know all of the words in yet. Plus, that is a way to start learning new languages. Can you tell how much I like this app? Look at the music categories you can choose from. Headphones for baby anybody? Yep. We got ‘em. There is so much going on with popular music on the radio these days, and my older kid has run across some stuff on YouTube and even other music apps like Pandora that I definitely do not like or approve. These music choices make me feel secure and make the little one wiggle and giggle.
The Baby’s Brilliant app is about more than entertaining your children. It’s an app that helps develop the skill set for learning. When children develop this early, they have a joy for learning, and that is key to opening up education for a lifetime. You can see it happening if you watch closely. It’s when kids go from laughter and giggles to intrigue.
They go from laughing at the letters that are on the iPad screen to tracing the letters on the screen! That is what I want to foster in my babies – and this is the kind of app that helps me do that.
